Ladybirds in the Spotlight!

Ladybirds were in the spotlight earlier this month with a TV feature on BBC Breakfast.

Helen Roy, Biological Record Centre's Coordinator of Ecological Data & Research and Coordinator of the UK Ladybird Survey, was interviewed about the decline of the most common species of ladybird in Britain.  This was as a result of  research carried out by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

We also recently announced the new Ladybird app, to encourage recording of ladybirds on smartphones.  You can read more about the app in the news article

To complete the ladybird story, an updated identification guide has also recently been published, which is co-authored by Helen Roy, Peter Brown, Richard Comont, Remy Poland and John Sloggett.

This revised (from Majerus & Kearns (1989)) and updated edition of Ladybirds provides a succinct but comprehensive and accessible overview of the biology of ladybirds and their parasites, focusing on ecology in an evolutionary context. It provides the latest information, coverage of recent additions to the British list including the harlequin ladybird, and makes suggestions for further research, both short and long term, highlighting gaps in knowledge and showing readers how to get involved with recording and studying ladybirds. It includes updated keys for the identification of ladybirds at late-instar larval and adult stages, and techniques for studying ladybirds and their parasites in both laboratory and field.

The book can be ordered from the NHBS environment bookstore website, where you can also find information on other wildlife books and guides.
