Summary

The following article outlines the proposal to resume data sharing between the NBN and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF.org).

The NBN Secretariat, in conjunction with JNCC, has prepared a draft strategy for the resumption of data sharing with GBIF.org. Data sharing with GBIF by the Network, and our communications surrounding this, has been inadequate resulting in some Data Partners having data on GBIF that did not want it there and some wanting an improved service to regularly deliver data to GBIF. This new draft strategy reaffirms our commitment in principle to sharing data globally as set out in the new NBN Strategy 2015-2020 and NBN Action Plan and it is being circulated now for comment.

Following recent changes within GBIF, new and existing data on GBIF.org must be assigned one of three Creative Commons data licenses (CC0, CC-BY, CC-BY-NC).  During November GBIF will be updating the datasets on GBIF.org and to meet this requriement. The NBN Secretariat proposes that we remove data currently on GBIF.org that has been provided by NBN in previous years. We then propose  working with NBN Data Partners to determine which datasets can be reloaded and which of the three licenses are most appropriate for each dataset. This is an opportunity to start afresh whereby Data Partners, as the data owner, has complete control over which datasets (if any) are available on GBIF.org and under what license.

The draft strategy for data sharing with GBIF.org can be found here. Any feedback about this draft document is very welcome, especially as to whether you agree with the proposed. Please email us at support@nbn.org.uk with any questions or feedback you may have. The steps below describe the process the NBN Secretariat will be following from here.

Process from here

  • If you haven't already please complete the following questionnaire to indicate if you wish your data to be shared via GBIF.org
  • The NBN Secretariat will contact you during October to discuss which datasets you wish to transfer and under which data license.
  • The NBN Secretariat will arrange for your data to be trasferred to GBIF.org
